During my vacation, we visited Dave’s family in Arizona. We stayed with his uncle and cousins at their amazing house with an awesome backyard. So many people in AZ have pools! It’s hard to wrap my brain around, coming from the Northwest.

Anyway, Dave’s cousin is about to enter her senior year in high school and she was delighted to do a portrait session with me. I thought the gorgeous pool would make a nice backdrop. Unfortunately I had to point my camera down at her much of the time, due to some pesky bulldozer sitting low in the background.

pinimageClearly she is adorable, but she was also a delight to work with. We decided to stick her boyfriend in… That was pretty fun!

pinimageOnce he got over the shyness, he did pretty well as a model. They are a cute couple, aren’t they?

So, if you haven’t already guessed, I want to start taking senior portraits for next year’s seniors! If any current seniors still need photos done, let me know. If you know any 16 or 17 year olds that aren’t camera shy, send ’em my way! Guess what else! I’ll offer a free photo shoot to any junior or senior that refers me to a friend. You can call it a two for one deal, I guess. 🙂

I thought it was time have a more appropriate profile picture for things like LinkedIn or my wedding site profiles. Some of my goofy ones won’t really work.  I am now offering profile head shots as one of my photography services, so I figured I could practice on myself.

Consider this a freebie addition to the collection of self-portraits that I’ve been doing. These are not themed though. Just plain old simple me. And for some reason, it’s a lot more embarrassing to post these photos!

Since I did no theme, I figured I would challenge myself just a little to make up for it. I decided on a bathroom shoot (notice the tile background?) just to get a soft light coming in from the window. It was a tight space to work with, but it worked out okay. Hopefully it’s not too obvious that I’m sitting in front of the bath tub, but it probably is since you now know the truth!

I tried one with a camera strap to show that I’m a photographer, but it felt too contrived and cheesy. I tried different shirts and managed to narrow it down to two. One says, “I’m tan and fun, and I like polka-dots!”, while the other says, “do I look twelve or what?!”. So, I’m not sure which one I like. I guess it doesn’t matter, because I can always use more than one for my different profiles. Anyway, here they are:

What I could get away with if I were still this cute!

Last night I was determined to do the “Back to the Future” self-portrait, inspired by photographer Irina Werning, that I had been promising everyone. I had the house to myself and enough time to do it. What I didn’t account for was my increasing sickness, complete with sneezing, dripping nose, and achy feelings. At least I was able to somewhat accurately recreate the sad and grumpy feelings I must have been having in the original photo.

I almost gave up half way through, because of all the new obstacles that I discovered in recreating my childhood photo.

First of all, I was much smaller (and cuter!) back then, so my body didn’t quite fit into a chair the same way. Since I was sitting down in the photo and my dad was standing up taking the picture, I had to position the camera very high above me. The biggest issue with that was that I was sitting on a chair, which was on a table. I did this in order to get the blinds in the background. So everything, including myself, was ever so carefully placed high atop various tables and stools.

The lighting was easier than I expected. I figured the light from a polaroid camera would likely be coming from the top of the camera. Unfortunately, the ceiling got in the way a little bit. If I had this to do over again, I would have positioned everything a lot closer to me to get the more blown out highlights.

I obviously couldn’t recreate everything, but I tried to do my best. I did actually have a board angled up to the right, but I couldn’t get it to stay. I also tried to get crafty with that weird necklace thing I was wearing. It’s funny, not until I finally scanned the photo in (after the shoot), could I tell that the red pointy thing on the necklace was a ribbon, not a feather. Oh well, just call it macaroni (from the yankee-doodle song, if you missed that one).

I started feeling pretty bad towards the end, so I decided that I was happy enough with the results.

Editing the result to look like a polaroid was probably the biggest challenge. I’m still not sure if I’m totally happy with it, but I tried. I even added the same polaroid border, minus the icky flame part coming out of my head in the original.

Anyway, here is a side-by-side of the original and my re-creation:

It felt like a crying day after this shoot.

Instagram actually does a fabulous job with filters too, so I played around with some of those. You can see a filter I applied to both here:

I haven’t had a chance to do many landscapes lately, so I was thrilled to have so many opportunities to do some on my trip. I’m posting just a handful of favorites here. Hopefully, that will appease anyone that is anxiously awaiting the next self-portrait profile pic! 🙂

I won’t write about my vacation here, except to say that it was really fun and I got some great shots despite so much bad weather. I did, however, write about my trip on my travel blog, which is more about traveling than about photos. As for this blog, it’s all about the photos!

And, last but not least, a photo of Dave tending the fire. My star shots wouldn’t have happened without him!

I’ll have more later, but these are a few teasers for any of you that like my landscapes.

I am posting this just before leaving for my road trip down to the Southwest. It should be fun!

We’re stopping in OR first to stay with a friend, CA next for the same reason, and then Joshua Tree! After camping there, we head over to visit some of Dave’s family in Pheonix for a couple of days. Then we head back home slowly through a few parks that we have yet to decide on. I’m so excited!

I so badly need a break, and unfortunately my self-portrait schedule will be thrown off a little by this trip. Yes, I could have done it before leaving, but that would require more planning ahead than I was already doing for this trip. Alas, my friends, you will have to wait for the next one until after I get back. Maybe by then, my mom or dad will have found that perfect picture that I so badly want to recreate! Cross your fingers!

I may be able to use my phone to make a mobile post. We’ll see. What I do know is that I will be taking lots and lots of pictures! Yay!

Anyway, so long! Farewell, for just about 10 days. If you need to contact me, still try. I may be able to at least check my email for most of the trip.

    Marie Glodt - Aloha Tracie,
I love your work and your sense of humor! Your blog is great in showing both.

When deciding which photographer it is important to work with someone who takes beautiful photos but also is great to be around. You are both of these things!

traciehowe - Marie, that is so sweet! Thank you for taking the time to visit my site and for appreciating what I try to convey with it. I don’t want to be anything but honest, and sometimes that means being a little silly too. 🙂ReplyCancel
