I’ve been bad about posting lately, I know. Just because I haven’t been posting, doesn’t mean I’ve had nothing to post about. In fact, that’s part of the problem. I’ve had too much to write about and too many photos to post. I also have a big collaborative wedding vendor project that I’ve been planning for this Friday, but that’s no excuse!

I am sorry. Let me take this opportunity to make it up to you by posting about my recent wedding, and promising a few more posts to come. Every day in fact, until I’m back on track! I won’t say too much, because you’re really here for the photos, aren’t you?

Here goes…

The Candice and Russell wedding happened over in West Richland. They got married at The Sandberg Event Center, which has a beautifully landscaped back yard, and an inside area where we all briefly took refuge during an uncommon bout of rain. Uncommon for Eastern Washington, that is. My favorite part of the venue was probably the women’s powder room where the ladies got ready.

Before showing the pictures, I have to mention how thankful I am to my second shooter, Natasha Ali, who not only drove out to Eastern Washington with me, but also came even further, from Canada, to help me out. I also want to thank Candice and Russell for being awesome clients, and for putting both me and Natasha up for two nights in a hotel. It’s a long drive out there!

And on to the pictures…

Teresa Howe - Great photos. Esp. love the ones of the flowergirl and ring bearer. Such cuties!ReplyCancel

When “adventurous explorer” was suggested by a loyal follower, I was very happy to oblige. I had actually already thought of doing something very similar on my own. I just figured I would use this as an opportunity to do it sooner!

As many of you know, I’ve been somewhat obsessed with traveling for some time. Since I’ve not really had many opportunities to travel lately, I find myself craving it even more. So, this self-portrait is a true representation of how I would like to be. I would like to be more adventurous as well, but I didn’t have a hang-glider or bungee cord on hand to represent the more extreme sports in this photo.

A few friends were nice enough to contribute to this shoot. I borrowed some things from a few people, and I even managed to convince one friend to help me lug everything (photo equipment included) up to Discovery Park and act as an assistant. Thanks to Collin, Dave, and Sean!

I blame the nice weather last weekend for making me forget to do this project earlier. Had I done it then, I probably would have succeeded in meeting my own expectations for what I wanted this to look like. Unfortunately, the only time I had later this week was just before sunset after a full day of rain. At least there was no rain! Anyway, I might end of recreating this one later, so it’s a little closer to what I was imagining.

Let me know what you think. And don’t mention the fact that I have no boat! I have already thought of many possible scenarios for not having a boat. Or that the map is sideways… I read maps sideways all the time! 🙂

This past weekend presented promising weather for a photo shoot. I was so excited that the sun decided to show it’s bright yellow face over Seattle, that I didn’t even consider looking for a sheltered spot in case the rain came back. The appearance of the sun often tricks us  ignorant optimistic Northwestern folk, into thinking that it will remain sunny and suddenly be warm. I should have known better after living here for at least a decade. Needless to say, about 10 minutes before the shoot, it started raining.

The weather literally put a damper on the plan to capture Candice and Russell against the gorgeous Seattle skyline at Kerry Park. I’m glad they had decided to go with a casual look, otherwise we may have had to cancel the entire shoot for fear of Candice freezing to death in a skirt. She had a jacket and jeans on, so she never got too uncomfortable.

After a few dreary shots, I remembered that there was an adorable, partially covered park a few blocks away. I had never been there, so I hoped that there was enough shelter from the trees to buy us some time while the Spring rain passed. Fortunately, there were several trees that provided ample protection from the elements.

We spent some time there, and, when the rain stopped, we even wandered around outside of the park. There were lots of good photo locations, and Candice and Russell were up for trying them all.

After we finished there, we headed back to Kerry Park to find a gaggle of teenagers posing for prom! Well, at least the weather was better. We wandered down the grassy hill a bit to get some more unconventional Kerry Park photos. Finally, we managed to get a few shots at the typical spots, including a few in the sculpture.

Throughout the shoot, wind and a light drizzle made an appearance on occasion, but the sun did too. The changing weather conditions made for a nice mix of lighting though! I even managed to capture them with a rainbow in the background! I’m glad they were such good sports about the temperamental weather.

They really did a great job! Such a cute and sweet couple. You can really tell that they are in love. I can’t wait to shoot their wedding later this month.

Greedy pirate is probably redundant, but it so perfectly describes what I set out to do with my most recent themed self-portrait. Melanie, a loyal Liker of my Facebook page, suggested doing my favorite deadly sin. While I don’t necessarily have a favorite one, I thought greed would be the easiest to pull off in a short time.

So, where did the pirate idea come from? Actually, Melanie also suggested that. She first wanted me to do a theme park character. When prompted for what she had in mind, she listed a few possibilities, one of which was a pirate. So, I figured, why not combine two great ideas?

I was inspired when I saw a huge jar of coins that Dave has in the closet. I decided to fish out as many quarters as I could find, and start stacking. I topped each pile with other coins I’ve collected from traveling and scattered a few more around, hoping to make the coins look more exotic.

And yes, I happened to have a pirate costume lying around. What can I say? I also had a bunch of random, old looking items that I thought might work for the background. I set up quite a nice little scene, if I do say so myself!

I wanted to include my new favorite arm prop, so I stuck it into a few scenes. I just can’t help myself sometimes! One of my favorite photos from this shoot was a little blurred because I accidentally moved the camera before taking it (and I didn’t realize until later). I had to show it though, because the hand is so prominently featured.

This shoot was the most fun of any since I started my themed self-portraits. I got really into it, and tried several different poses, expressions, and even a little symbolism with my piggy bank. Some of them may not be so much greedy as they are just piratey, but they were too funny to not include. I had too many favorites to choose from, so here are several variations on this theme.

Krista Simons of Privé Bartending & Events, Inc. invited me to be the photographer for the Spring open house at the Lake Washington Rowing Club last Wednesday. This place is a beautiful Fremont venue for events, and of course, for rowers at the club. The open house showcased a few vendors including Cameron Catering, which served amazing food that made your mouth water just to look at it!  Midnight Blossom provided the center pieces, which were these adorable little plant scenes… I can’t really describe them well, so make sure you find the photos below! And Tim, of Ideal Entertainment, not only provided the tunes, but added to the mood with his color changing lights! Several other vendors, brides, and rowing club members also showed up. Everyone was really nice, and I enjoyed talking with as many as I could.

Krista suggested setting up a photo booth for the event in addition to my general event photos. I was happy to try it out! I’ve never done one for an event before, but I have a little experience with setting them up for friends. There were a few things to figure out, such as the fact that some people really ARE taller than 6’5″! But all in all, it went pretty well! I have to thank my friend, Olivia, for helping me out with it. I was afraid of being too busy shooting the event, so I asked her to be in charge of the booth as my assistant for the evening. She was great about helping people use it and chatting with everyone. People really had a good time with the booth and the props. I have collected some random props over the years, so I was well armed with fun things for people to pose with. I think the fake arm I purchased for April Fool’s day was quite popular! 🙂 Here is a mix of event photos and photo booth shots. Enjoy!
