It’s been a while since posting any family shoots here on the blog. I’ve been focusing my attention on weddings, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t still photograph other portrait sessions. I still shoot families, kids, babies, and even boudoir. I’ll even do the occasional head shot!

In fact, Erin originally found me for her head shots and was happy to hire me again for her family’s photos. This took place last October (I told you, it’s been a while!) during my Fall mini sessions. I actually fit in two days worth of mini shoots – one in Seattle and one on Mercer Island (well technically 3 since one day got partially rained out).

Erin was generous enough to spread the word to the Mercer Island community through her blog, My Mercer Island and it’s newsletter. Because of that, I got enough interest to warrant another day of shooting. How awesome is that?! AND her family is beautiful, so that’s always a bonus. 😉

Here are a few photos from her family’s shoot and the canvases she purchased for her entry way. You can’t tell very easily, but that is her wall showing exactly what images and sizes she wanted printed on canvas. I was able to show her this so she knew what to expect. I have a very fun iPad app that allows me to do this! 🙂

Talk about inspiring!

Inspiration for this shoot first came from the cherry trees blooming all over Seattle. Audrey, my lovely model, was also interested in taking advantage of the beautiful cherry blossoms. It wasn’t until I scouted the Seattle Arboretum that I became truly excited for the shoot to come! The cherry trees and rhododendrons were both blooming, making a magical setting for this garden elopement inspiration bridal shoot. Audrey was amazing and stunning, really helping me pull off the look I was going for.

There was something about this shoot that really spoke to me. I knew what I wanted beforehand, but when I looked at the photos afterwards, I was transported. These photos could have been taken anywhere! When looking through them, I first imagined this to be a quiet garden elopement in France. I then dreamed of an intimate wedding at an Italian villa and a destination wedding in New Zealand. Sure, the flowers might be different elsewhere, but those are just details. This shoot gave me inspiration to expand my portfolio to include more locations like this. More beautiful places that could be just about anywhere in the world.

I feel a strong desire to travel myself when I look at these images and those of other shoots I’ve been working on recently. I hope to invoke that same feeling in others and I now realize that that is what it has always been about for me. I hope that you find inspiration here. If not to travel, then at least to find your own special place at home that celebrates the beauty that this world has to offer.

Dragonfly Retreat weddingpinimage

When Stephani and Scott first met me and told me about their Dragonfly Retreat wedding, I was excited to shoot at the pretty Bothell venue. When they told me about their Space Dinosaur wedding theme, I knew they were the perfect couple for me!

I love a good theme, and the sillier, the better. Don’t get me wrong, I adore pretty, romantic, or rustic style weddings, but with a funny theme I always know what I’m getting myself into. I know that my couples aren’t taking themselves too seriously and those are the kind of people I most enjoy working with.

This offbeat wedding at the Dragonfly retreat went just as expected, full of fun and thoughtful details that stuck close to the theme. I was honored in being assigned a speaking role during the ceremony “launch” at this space (and dino) themed wedding. The anticipation made me nervous for some reason, but when it was my turn I simply said “Go!”. No big deal after all, but fun to be a part of. Stephani and Scott mixed their respective whiskeys together in a space themed decanter, pausing to smile and pose with their bottles before the final kiss. Usually ceremonies aren’t notable enough to write much about, but this one was simply the awesome!

The evening started off with the usual traditions and later continued under the venue’s outdoor picnic shelter with smores and ukulele songs. For me it ended (how I wish all weddings would end now) with the couple posing in front of a dinosaur cardboard cut out!

Congrats you guys! You’re the best!

Brian and Agata, AKA Bragata, are a sweet, down-to-earth couple who didn’t want a lot of fuss for their wedding. The Wayfarer wedding on Whidbey Island was perfectly orchestrated by attentive staff who took care of a lot of the details from decor to games, and even playing with the kids. The Wayfarer has a slightly rustic quality with antique vignettes here and there to complete the charming look. They provided much of the vintage details for Brian and Agata’s wedding, including the Airstream out back, a few old tandem bikes, and the looooooong dinner table and chairs which I fell in love with (as you will see evidence of in this post).

It was a lovely affair, sweet and uncomplicated. My kind of wedding! I was hired for a “short wedding” (only for the pre-dinner part of the wedding day in this case), but seeing the venue made me wish I could stay later. Surely the candle chandeliers and string lights would have made for some beautiful and romantic photos of Brian and Agata’s Wayfarer wedding in the light of dusk!

Besides my usual documentation of events, despite my limited time I was able to capture everyone in a big group photo, people laughing and playing games, the stunning setting, and some young photographers in the making. It was a good time for all. I wish Agata and Brian nothing but the best in their future together!

An escape from Seattle for an elopement under the trees

Terra and Dominique are one of the kindest, most thoughtful couples I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I was thrilled when they contacted me to photograph their Mount Rainier elopement. Actually, now that I think of it, they weren’t actually sure where they wanted to have their ceremony at that point. But they did know that it would be held somewhere in the great outdoors of the Pacific Northwest, and they figured that a hike would likely be involved.

Living in Seattle we know all too well that the weather can be unpredictable in October, so they spent many weekends leading up to the wedding scouting for places that would provide protection from the rain if needed. Eventually they came up with the perfect idea – to have the ceremony under Mount Rainier’s famous giants in the Grove of the Patriarchs! This made so much sense, because it was beautiful and easy for everyone to get to, including the two other witnesses, Terra’s New York city-slicker sister and nephew.

As luck would have it, the day turned out to be sunny and gorgeous! An awesome day to photograph a Mount Rainier elopement under the trees! The ceremony was very intimate and sweet, held under one of the grove’s most gigantic trees. Terra and Dominique had beautiful wood rings made by David and Nicola of Touch Wood Rings. As a fellow nature lover, I spent a lot of time photographing these while trying not to drool all over them! We had a lot of fun, taking as much time as we needed for the ceremony, the photos, and even some champaign.

I love these kinds of weddings, because there is no pressure, no rush, and no stress! It also helps when the couple is as amazing as these two! Congratulations Terra and Dominique!
